McCarthy: Closing Guantanamo Would Harm U.S. National Security

February 23, 2016

In a new video released from House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R., Cal.), McCarthy pieced together news stories that show all of the dangerous jihadists from Guantanamo Bay.

The jihadists that were released from the military prison have often returned to a life of terror. Tuesday marked the Obama administration's self-imposed deadline to close down Guantanamo Bay, a goal President Obama has had since his first day in office. In a press conference Tuesday, Obama said that the public has been scared into thinking that closing the military prison would make them less safe.

McCarthy called closing Guantanamo Bay "dangerous."

"Congress has made its position clear time and again: it is dangerous and irresponsible to close Guantanamo Bay. We have passed and President Obama has signed legislation barring him from moving detainees to the United States. President Obama has stated that he still wants to close the facility, and law required him to submit a plan so he can show the American people exactly what he would do. This latest proposal from the Administration is not complete and it would sacrifice U.S. national security for the sake of a misguided campaign pledge."

Obama has continually said that Guantanamo Bay has been an active recruiting tool for terrorists, which has been rated false by PolitiFact.

Congress has asked Obama to include in his plan about where and how the administration plans to hold existing and future detainees.

Obama administration once released five top-ranking Taliban officials in exchange for the release of Army Staff Sargent Bowe Bergdahl, who had walked off his base and was captured by the Taliban. One of the five Taliban officials has since returned to militant activity.

"We have managed it just fine," Obama said.
