Former Democratic IT Staffer to Return From Pakistan, Face Charges

Former Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz

A former Democratic IT staffer, who fled to Pakistan while under investigation, has struck a deal with U.S. officials and will return to the United States to face criminal charges.

Hina Alvi will return to the United States "during the last week of September 2017" under the condition that she is not arrested in front of her children, the Washington Examiner reported.

Alvi is the wife of  Imran Awan, who served as IT staffer to Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D., Fla.) while she was the Democratic National Committee chairwoman.

Alvi and Awan were both indicted in August on charges of conspiracy and bank fraud. Awan was arrested in July at Dulles International Airport while trying to board a flight to his native Pakistan.

The FBI and Capitol Police had been investigating the couple for irregularities regarding computer equipment purchases. The equipment went missing while the two had access to sensitive government information.

The couple also faces charges of making false statements. Authorities believe they used false information to acquire home equity lines of credit, and intended to send the funds overseas.

As part of Alvi's deal, which was documented in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, she will be forced to surrender her passport upon return to the country.
