Representatives Mario Diaz-Balart (R., Fl.) said any final compromise on immigration reform will have to contain "border and interior" security components Sunday on CNN:
CANDY CROWLEY: [...] But as you know, what conservatives in particular and there are many of them in the House say is the last time we did immigration reform under Ronald Reagan what happened was we put everybody on amnesty as they called it at that point. And we never saw the border get secured. So is it going to be enough for you to say to your House Republican colleagues "we're going to do it at the same time?"
MARIO DIAZ-BALART: Here's the issue. It's not only that. Because that is true. What you just said, that's exactly what happened after the '86 legalization. So, no, there has to be a real, not lip service, a real serious border and interior security component of this. We do not want to be -- we don't want to go through this effort to be in the same place five or ten years down the road. And therefore we have to learn from the mistakes of the past. Part of it is border security. Part of it is interior security. We have to modernize the visa system, the visa program so people can legally apply to come to the United States, which is why all of it has to be fixed. It is broken from A to Z. We have to fix it.
