Dem Congressman: Trump Made Right Decision to Strike Syria, Obama Should Have Done It

April 12, 2017

Rep. Seth Moulton (D., Mass.) said Wednesday that he supported President Trump's military strike against Syria last week, criticizing President Obama for not doing so in 2013.

In the wake of Trump ordering the missile attack on a Syrian air base in retaliation for Bashar al-Assad's deadly chemical weapons attack last week, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough asked Moulton if there needed to be a "what's next" policy proposal from the administration regarding Syria.

Moulton said that if there was another strike ordered, the administration needed to present a plan going forward with military and diplomatic actions for congressional approval.

"So do you oppose last Thursday night's attacks?" Scarborough asked.

"No, I think it was the right decision, and I was critical of President Obama for not taking that action a few years ago," Moulton, a military veteran, said. "But the question is, where do we go in Syria? And it's very clear that if we don't have a plan, it's not fair to the American people, and most of all, it's not fair to our troops to ask them to risk their lives without any end game."

Trump has said he will not send troops into Syria, but his administration has stepped up its rhetoric that Assad must give up his power and Russia should stop backing the regime.

Obama said in 2012 that the use of chemical weapons by Assad would cross a "red line" with him, but when Assad used such weapons in 2013, Obama ultimately elected not to engage in retaliatory missile strikes.
