Trump: Schumer 'Doesn't Seem Like a Serious Person'

June 28, 2017

President Donald Trump mocked Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) as not a "serious person" when asked about possible health care negotiations with the Democrats on Wednesday.

After Trump visited with the Chicago Cubs, who were at the White House to be honored for winning last year's World Series, a reporter in the Oval Office asked him about the Republicans' attempt to repeal Obamacare. The Senate GOP health care bill hit a snag on Tuesday when Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) delayed bringing it to the floor because the Republicans did not have the votes to pass it.

The reporter noted that Schumer wanted all 100 senators to come to the White House to discuss a health care reform plan.

"Would you be willing to negotiate with all of them?" the reporter asked.

"I've got to find out if he's serious," Trump said. "[Schumer] hasn't been serious. Obamacare is such a disaster, such a wreck, and he wants to try and save something that's really hurting a lot of people ... It'd have to be very, very serious, and he's done a lot of talking, bad talking, and he just doesn't seem like a serious person."

Schumer said Sunday on ABC's "This Week" that Democrats wanted to sit down with Republicans to find ways to improve Obamacare, but Democrats are against repealing the law.
