Scarborough: Americans Are Growing More Conservative on Abortion as Fetal Technology Continues to Advance

February 20, 2018

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough on Tuesday said technological advancements are leading younger Americans to become more conservative on abortion.

Scarborough's comments came during a broader conversation on gun control where he compared changing views on abortion to views on guns in the wake of last week's school shooting.

Survivors of the mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla. are organizing marches and rallies for action on gun control, drawing extended media attention.

"I think the culture is changing," MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell said on "Morning Joe." "Everyone can react to this new generation who are the post-Columbine generation of kids, and they don't want to live this way ... The suburban voters are not going to take this anymore, and they're hearing it from their children."

Scarborough, who was a strong gun rights supporter when he was a Republican congressman, has moved left on the issue since. He compared the liberal take on the issue among younger Americans to how poll numbers are moving in favor of banning abortions after 20 weeks.

"You are seeing poll numbers move on abortion for banning abortions after 20 weeks. Why? Because for the past decade, younger Americans have been going in and they have been seeing 3-D imagery where they can look into the womb," Scarborough said.

"If some activist said, 'Your child is a lump,' I must tell you, I've had four kids," he added. "I've never once had a doctor go to me, 'we've got your lump, let me show you your lump, look at your lump's profile.'"

Scarborough spoke of his son, Jack, and how he could see early in his fetal development that he had a different nose.

"This is an example of science, technology changing that is going to change the politics of abortion," he said. "This is an issue that culturally is going to change. Americans, younger voters are going to become more conservative on abortion because they see their child very early on in the womb."

Scarborough argued that an increased awareness of mass shootings will similarly cause Americans to call for increased gun control.

"The same thing's going to happen with guns. Your kids are watching other kids getting gunned down in schools. That's going to have an impact," he added.
