Jennifer Lawrence: Recent Hurricanes Are 'Mother Nature's Rage' Over Trump Winning

September 8, 2017

Actress Jennifer Lawrence said the recent hurricanes hitting the United States feel like "mother nature's rage" in response to President Donald Trump's administration.

While promoting her new movie Mother! this week, a reporter asked Lawrence about director Darren Aronofsky's remarks about the film's dark tone.

"I mean when the director was asked about the film, why it was so dark, he said, 'It's a mad time to be alive.' And there is certainly an end of days feeling about it. For many people, in America who would say, perhaps it's truer there at the moment than anywhere else," the reporter said, asking for her thoughts about the changes in the U.S. over the past year.

"It's scary," Lawrence said. "You know, it's this new language that's forming. I don't even recognize it. It's also scary to know—it's been proven through science—that climate change is due to human activity, and we continue to ignore it, and the only voice that we really have is through voting."

"And you have voted very recently, as a country," the reporter said.

"And we voted, and it was really startling," Lawrence said. "You know you're watching these hurricanes now, and it's really hard especially while promoting this movie, not to feel mother nature's rage and wrath."

The reporter said it was not just about climate change but also that it is a time of "division" in the U.S.

"It's really polarizing and upsetting," Lawrence said, adding that she had seen things on television that made her sick and confused.

Asked if she found Trump confusing, she said, "I think I know exactly what he is."

Lawrence is one of Hollywood's biggest stars, with an Oscar for Best Actress already under her belt for her role in the 2012 film Silver Linings Playbook. She's also known for her leading roles in the popular The Hunger Games and X-Men series.
