An Indiana man shot a nunchuck-wielding attacker six times on Tuesday.

The incident happened after the man's wife and her ex-husband began arguing over a cell phone bill near the town of Avon, Indiana. The man, David Gregory, was forced to defend himself and his wife after the ex-husband showed up to the couple's home with a pair of nunchucks.

"I’m sitting here at the back patio," Gregory told WISH. "My wife is sitting here. My dog starts barking. I see his car pull up."

"My thoughts were, ‘he’s going to try and beat me up or kill me with these nunchucks then go take it out on my wife.’"

Gregory said he already had his gun outside with him. "I reached for my gun," he told the news station. "He gets out of his car, in a rage. You could see it in his eyes."

Gregory's wife said she feared for both of their lives. "If he could’ve got Dave, he would’ve definitely came after me no doubt," she said.

The woman's ex then began running toward the couple apparently unfazed by Gregory's firearm. "I told him he’s an idiot," Gregory told WISH. "I pointed my gun at him. He kept making progress toward me, swinging his nunchucks and that’s when I shot him."

The ex-husband suffered six gunshot wounds and is in critical condition. Gregory and his wife were unharmed in the attack.

Gregory's wife said she was glad her husband was able to protect her and sure he would do it again if he had to.

"I give all my love and appreciation to my husband," she told WISH. "He did a phenomenal job and he’d do it again, for his family. That’s the kind of man he is. I think it’s finally over. Unfortunately it came to this. No, I do not wish death upon nobody. I don’t want him to pass away. But, he is in the situation he’s in because he put himself there."
