Florida Cancer Patient Dropped from Insurance Due to Obamacare

'This came on us like a ton of bricks'

November 14, 2013

Millions of Americans continue to lose their health insurance, but for one family, their cancelled health insurance is especially devastating. Gloria Canter, a Floridian woman battling cancer, received notice via a letter, that her and her husband Jay’s health insurance will be dropped in Summer 2014 due to a loophole in Obamacare.

Canter has five brain tumors, in addition to the tumors in her bones. Her husband Jay shared that the notice came as a crushing blow to them, saying "This came on us like a ton of bricks."

The Canter's feel betrayed because President Obama promised 36 times that if Americans liked their health care plans, they would be able to keep them. Their insurance company has offered them a new plan, but this is of little consolation to the Canters as the new plan is more expensive than their previous plan. Adding to their frustration, doctors cannot promise that the hospital will still accept their new healthcare plan. Jay sadly said "We don’t know what’s going to happen."

Update:

Her health insurance plan is being canceled because it does not meet Obamacare requirements. Additionally, it stipulates that she must also carry benefits for maternity and pediatrics benefits, none of which she needs, as she will not be able to have children after her cancer treatment.
