Behar: Trump Cutting Ties With Cuba Would Affect Lung Cancer Vaccine

November 28, 2016

Joy Behar claimed Monday on The View that if President-elect Donald Trump cuts diplomatic ties with Cuba, then American doctors may not be able to work with Cuban doctors who are close to finding a lung cancer vaccine.

The ladies on The View discussed politicians' responses to former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro's death over the weekend.

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg started the conversation, saying the younger generation "didn't grow up with the Castro regime as being bad."

Behar jumped in to discuss her trip to Cuba in April.

"I mean, they have a 100 percent literacy rate there, so everybody gets free education, everybody has top of the line medical care, so everyone's healthy," she said.

Guest host Jedediah Bila did not look pleased with Behar's comments.

Behar then spoke about Trump's statement on potentially cutting ties with Cuba as president.

"There's one thing that's interesting to me because there's a vaccine that's being developed in Cuba to treat lung cancer, and it's showing very promising results," she said. "So, if Trump says we're going to cut ties with Cuba completely, our doctors will not be able to work with them."

Bila was quick to respond to Behar's statement on Cuban-American relations.

"He's not saying that, though," Bila said. "He's not saying cut ties with Cuba. What he's saying is let's open the economic gates between the United States and Cuba but with conditions. You have to free political prisoners."
