Behar Calls Obama's 'Keep Your Health Care Plan' Promise a 'Misjudgment'

June 13, 2017

Joy Behar, co-host of ABC's "The View," on Tuesday defended former President Barack Obama's infamous promise that all Americans could keep their health care plan under the Affordable Care Act, calling it a "misjudgment" rather than a falsehood.

Behar's comment was a response to a statement from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who appeared on "The View" and defended President Donald Trump’s credibility by pointing to his predecessor in the Oval Office.

Behar said that Trump's credibility pales in comparison to that of former FBI Director James Comey because of Trump's record among fact checkers.

"Let's be real. The guy—according to PolitiFact, Trump has lied 277 times. We don't have that kind of record on Comey. Come on," Behar said.

Gingrich turned the topic back to Obama.

"You mean like 'you get to keep your doctor, you get to keep your insurance?'" Gingrich asked, referring to Obama's repeated promise that Obamacare would not affect Americans' existing health care coverage plans if they wanted to keep them.

PolitiFact rated Obama's line its "lie of the year" in 2013, writing that "the public realized Obama's breezy assurances were wrong."

Still, Behar defended Obama's promise, saying that it was "not a lie" but a "misjudgment."

"That was not a lie; that was a misjudgment. That's different," Behar said.
