The man behind scandal-ridden Washington, D.C. mayor Vincent Gray’s massive “shadow campaign” is an Obama donor, Politico reports:
The businessman who reportedly financed a massive shadow campaign during the 2010 Washington D.C. mayoral primary has given $10,000 to President Obama’s reelection and the Democratic National Committee, records show.
Jeffrey E. Thompson, a prominent D.C. accountant, gave more than $600,000 to a secret effort on behalf of Mayor Vince Gray to oust former D.C. mayor Adrian Fenty, according to news reports. Gray denies knowledge of the effort, but several of his former campaign staffers have reached plea deals with federal prosecutors that have brought the accusations to light.
Campaign finance records show $10,000 in donations as of the last filing period given in May of 2011 — after the irregularities in the 2010 mayoral primary. The DNC and the Obama campaign did not respond to requests for comment, nor would they comment about whether the money would be returned.
