Sandra Bullock Attached to Star in Movie Dramatizing Wendy Davis Abortion Filibuster

Wendy Davis

Oscar-winning actress Sandra Bullock is attached to a project to play Wendy Davis, the Texas Democratic state senator who became a progressive darling after filibustering an abortion bill in 2013.

According to Deadline, which appears supportive of the movie's politics, the film is called Let Her Speak and is written by Mario Correa. The report states Bullock's attachment is subject to getting a director she likes.

Davis donned pink running shoes and filibustered for more than 11 hours on June 25, 2013, successfully blocking Senate Bill 5. The bill, among other measures, banned abortion after 20 weeks:

Let Her Speak covers that historic day and how a onetime teen mom who became a Harvard-trained lawyer showed the courage to change her own life, along with the lives of American women.

The film is being produced by Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch for Escape Artists, Jonathan Shukat for ShowKat Productions, and Bullock. They will quickly secure a director and lock in the distributor.

Correa is repped at WME, and Heroes and Villains Entertainment. Bullock is repped by CAA.

The bill passed in a later session that summer, however, and Gov. Rick Perry signed it into law.

Davis became a liberal icon after her filibuster and went on to run for governor on the Democratic ticket in 2014. She lost to Republican Greg Abbott in a landslide.
