Sofia Vergara: Feminist Icon

A lot of people are very upset that Sofia Vergara—an American success story* if there ever was one—has engaged in the extremely non-feminist activity of having a sense of humor about herself. In case you missed it, and I have no idea how you might have given it's all anyone's whinging about this morning, Vergara was put on a literal pedestal during a bit about the Emmys and how they have lots of lady-members or whatever. The bit itself was only kind of funny; its one redeeming quality was Vergara's humorous and appropriate physical comedy, as well as her pride and sense of self-respect. She's the best.

Anyway, if there's anyone that feminists should be celebrating, it's Sofia Vergara. Through dint of her own hard work she has become an international icon and found success as a proud Colombian actress in the United States of America, no mean feat in these days of raucous immigration debates. So allow me to provide some crucial context about the awesomeness of Sofia Vergara, Feminist Icon.

According to Wikipedia, she was born and raised in a modestly sized Colombian city, the daughter of a farmer and a homemaker. While growing up in this humble setting, she was offered a chance to try her hand at modeling. She wasn't sure she could cut it.

But she persevered! And, soon enough, she was a big star, signing a deal with, ugh, Pepsi.

Sorry, Ms. Vergara. I'm a Diet Coke guy.

Whoa, hey. Chill out. You're still cool. Is it really that bad I prefer delicious, delicious Diet Coke to Pepsi?

Tough but fair. Anyway, Vergara moved to the United States and brought her whole family along with her. After a ton of modeling work and some smaller acting gigs, Vergara landed the role of a lifetime: Gloria Pritchett on Modern Family, ABC's five-time winner of the best comedy trophy at the Emmys. Though she has yet to take home a trophy herself, Vergara has been nominated for best supporting actress four times. Her time will come soon, I'm sure. Fortunately, she's prepared: She's had a lot of practice bounding up and down awards stage steps.

Vergara, who recently became a citizen, is a true American success story. She's got brains too, judging by her (well, her characters') choice of reading material:

Vergara is everything that makes this country great. Yet there are those who condemn her for having it all. Why would they put her mental health at risk like that?

That's messed up, man. Unsurprisingly, ladies—many of them self-described feminists—have been much harsher on our Colombian-American queen than guys.

When will women stop tearing down women? Is this what feminism hath wrought? For shame. For. Shame.

*Yes, yes, I know she's from Colombia. Don't worry, it'll all be covered.
