Ellison's Must Read of the Day

July 21, 2014

My must read of the day is "What we learned from liberals at Netroots Nation," in Politico:

DETROIT—At a high-profile gathering of progressives this week, Hillary Clinton was tolerated, Barack Obama was pitied, and Elizabeth Warren was treated like a hero.

The annual liberal confab known as Netroots Nation brought together around 3,000 activists converged for several days of campaign training, a protest or two, and speeches from Warren, Vice President Joe Biden, and other Democrats. […]

Elizabeth Warren stole the show this week with her tough messages to Wall Street and Republicans. The Massachusetts senator insists she’s not running in 2016, but the conference made clear that progressives will hold midterm and presidential candidates to the populist standard she has set.

Warren may excite the base and enthuse those at Netroots, but she does not have the same effect across the board—at least according to Politico.

In another article published Monday, a Politico poll found that Warren had the least amount of influence over voters in battleground states.

It’s highly unlikely Warren will be a major force in 2014; her influence on voter turnout will be minimal and her name recognition is low enough that few voters are going to hold candidates to her "populist standard." They certainly won’t in major battleground races. There is of course more time for 2016.

Right now, I’m unconvinced, and it’s because of polls such as Politico’s. The far left is excited about Warren, but the majority of the population has yet to be wooed by her rousing speeches.
